Preliminary assessment of river pollution in the Paraguay River and identification of proposals for waste management
The shipyard industry in the Bañado Tacumbú neighborhood (Paraguay) has a significant impact on the environment and the local community, especially on fishers.
From an environmental point of view, the construction, repair, and maintenance of vessels generate waste and emissions that affect the water of the Paraguay River. Through a preliminary analysis of the water quality of the Paraguay River, its bathymetry, the presence of microplastics, and turbidity, it has been possible to see the relationship between the activities of this industry and the state of the river's water.
Activities carried out during the project
Thanks to the travel to the Bañado Tacumbú neighborhood, it was possible to experience firsthand the current situation of the area. Meeting the CAMSAT team in person allowed us to see their way of organizing and working, as well as the main challenges the neighborhood lives with. Water measurements of the Paraguay River were taken in an area close to the neighborhood's shipyards. During the river outings, various instruments were used: a bathymetric sonar, water analysis kits, a microplastics net, a Secchi disk, and a temperature profiler.
