Training in sustainable navigation and field data acquisition for the implementation of a tidal energy installation
Panama, despite its economic development and competitive position in Latin America, faces high levels of inequality. Approximately 40% of the population lives in a situation of total poverty, and 16.6% in extreme poverty.
In the Pearl Islands Archipelago, especially on Saboga Island, there is a shortage of energy resources, difficulties in accessing education, and limited job opportunities. The lack of economic diversification and the concentration on activities such as fishing and agriculture contribute to this problem. To improve the situation, it is suggested to implement programs that promote economic diversification, and to encourage education and job training to improve access to basic resources such as energy.
Activities carried out during the project
The educational activities were mainly aimed at boys and girls with the goal of learning sustainable ways of navigating, as well as fostering respect and awareness. The research line is related to the future implementation of renewable energies. Data was obtained using low-cost instrumentation: two drifter buoys, a tide gauge, a temperature/depth profiler, and an echo sounder. Results were obtained for the characterization of tidal currents, obtaining average velocities, and bathymetric characterization. Sediment characterization and the collection of microplastic samples were also carried out.
